Our values in practice

Compassion

Noticing, feeling, and responding to distress with warmth, care, and a commitment to action. Caring about residents, families, and one another.

What we believe

  • Everyone deserves to feel heard, even when their words don’t come easily.
  • Distress takes many forms: Pain, confusion, fear, loneliness – all deserve our attention.
  • Small things mean everything in care.
  • We are all human; patience and forgiveness see us through hard days.

What this looks like in practice

  • We listen to understand – through words, expressions, and what’s unspoken.
  • We notice the small signs – a change in mood, a drop in appetite, a quiet withdrawal.
  • We anticipate distress and step in before it deepens.
  • We make time for the small kindnesses, even on busy shifts – a familiar song, a held hand, a remembered name.
  • We meet hard moments with patience – for residents, and for each other.

Decency

Treating people with respect, honesty, and consideration.

What we believe

  • A resident is a person with a name, a life, and a story, never just a room or a diagnosis.
  • Honesty builds trust – with residents, families, and each other.
  • Dignity lives in the smallest moments.
  • Humility keeps us open to perspectives we might miss.

What this looks like in practice

  • We treat each resident as an individual, knowing what matters to them.
  • We are honest, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  • We think before we speak; tone matters as much as words.
  • We knock, we ask, we wait – every time.
  • We listen to families and colleagues – they often see what we miss.
  • We speak up when something isn’t right – for safety, for dignity, or because it could be better.

Development

Growing as individuals, and making our home a better place.

What we believe

  • Good care evolves – there is always more to learn.
  • Residents flourish when their interests, identity, and history are honoured.
  • A home worth living in is one we keep improving – small things, every day.

What this looks like in practice

  • We learn from each shift – through training, reflection, and feedback.
  • We encourage residents to pursue their interests and try new things.
  • We champion causes we care about – dementia care, end-of-life support, infection control, activities, or anything that matters to us.
  • We leave each room and each shift better than we found it, asking: ‘Is this acceptable? How can I make it better?’

Accountability

Owning our work, our promises, and our mistakes.

What we believe

  • People depend on each other in a care home – promises matter.
  • Mistakes happen; what matters is how we respond.
  • High standards are how we keep residents safe and families confident.
  • Trust is built in the small moments of follow-through.

What this looks like in practice

  • We do what we said we would – residents, families, and colleagues all depend on it.
  • We are open about mistakes – we apologise, put things right, and tell those affected.
  • Handover matters in care: We close the loop on what we started, or hand it over clearly so a colleague can pick it up.
  • We hold ourselves to high standards, and learn from incidents, complaints, and near misses.
